HARLAN COUNTY U.S.A. (1976) Dir. Barbara Kopple
Barbara Kopple’s Oscar-winning film is considered one of the best American documentaries ever made. Shot on very little budget with a crew that lived with Kentucky miners for a year, it is a direct and unflinching record of the Duke Power strike at Brookside Mine. Violence and injustice pervade the county from the greedy corporation and murderous union boss to the corrupt local law and despicable gun thugs… all meted out to the sound of legendary country and bluegrass protest music.
KAALA PATTHAR (1979) Dir. Yash Chopra
Amitabh Bachchan at the height of his superstardom plays Vijay, a man dismissed from the navy for cowardice and now working in a coalmine haunted daily by his past actions. Yash Chopra’s take on the all-star 70s disaster movie contrasts the grimy lives of the miners with luxurious environs of the boss and his management lackeys. But when profit is advanced over safety, there is violent retribution and heroism from Vijay. Featuring the music of Rajesh Roshan and legendary voices of Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar & Mohammed Rafi.
