SUPAKINO PRESENTS TURBANS SEEN ON SCREEN: OCTOPUSSY + INTRODUCTION

For the 40th Anniversary of Octopussy, SUPAKINO brings Turbans Seen On Screen to The Garden Cinema. This year’s South Asian Heritage Month is all about “Stories To Tell” and this under-screened Bond film is surrounded by many fascinating stories linking British film history to the British South Asian experience.

Our curator Ranjit S. Ruprai will discuss his how his programme of film screenings featuring notable characters wearing turbans started under a railway arch in East London and was inspired by watching Octopussy as a child. Our guest speaker will be Del Singh who tied Kabir Bedi’s turban for many of the scenes shot in the UK. He will tell us the story of how Kabir Bedi ended up wearing his school uniform turban and also share his memories and photographs of hanging around with the cast and crew behind the scenes. There will also be a recorded introduction from Kabir Bedi himself.

About the Film:

Kabir Bedi is Gobinda, henchman of villainous Afghan prince Kamal Khan (Louis Jourdan). He is Khan’s personal servant, bodyguard and assassin. James Bond (Roger Moore) is relentlessly pursued by Gobinda throughout his mission to avenge 009’s death, discover the source of jewellery smuggling, and thwart a renegade Soviet general by preventing World War III. But who is the mysterious Octopussy controlling a cult of acrobatic tattooed ladies from her floating palace in India?
